RIVER, OCEAN, HILLS RIDE - with John M.

  • Down the freeway to the Raffles Hotel where we will pick up the river on all the little side roads until we get down to Fremantle.
  • To that little cafĂ© at South Beach for coffee.
  • On to Rockingham beach front on back roads and then stay close to the ocean as we round Safety Bay and on to Mandurah.
  • Mandurah to Pinjarra and then up into the hills to Dwellingup for lunch at the cafĂ© on the main street.

The Father's Day Ride - with Bruce.
(Bruce actually has another name for this ride, but it won't be repeated here).
  • Depart East Perth at 9:00am.
  • We hope to see the blossoming orchards in the Perth Hills and the wheat and canola crops in the wheat belt.
  • We'll travel up to the top of Welshpool Road and then wind all the way through the hills and past Mundaring Weir to Mundaring township.
  • From there it's along the highway to Sawyers Valley and off left the back way through to Gidgegannup for morning tea at the bakery.
  • If the bike can stand the weight of pies, pasties and cakes consumed at the famed bakery, Toodyay awaits. But we don't stop here.
  • We will head NE towards Goomalling for about 15 km then turn right on the Buckland Road and go south to Irish Town and Northam about 20 km (approx. 1 hr 10min and 78 km from the Bakery at Gidgegannup)
  • Then there is lunch at that lovely little cafe on the Avon River in Northam. It's right by the start point for the Avon Descent.
  • The Menu is available here.
  • Then head home down the Spencer Brook - York Road through York and The Lakes on to Perth (2hrs, 133 km from Northam).
  • I'm guessing you'll be back in Perth by 4 pm after an approx 290 km trip.
  • Fuel available at Toodyay, Dowerin, Meckering, Northam, The Lakes etc

    Annual Ulysses Memorial Ride
This is a "must do" event for Ulysses Members.
    • Ulysses Branches around the country, indeed round the world, dedicate the 2nd Sunday in September each year as a day of remembrance for those members who have "Ridden On". In most cases this is done in practice by all the Ulysses branches in a given area jointly or independently riding to a place where a short ceremony is conducted to honour those members. The tradition in the greater Perth area is for branches from as far north as Geraldton and as far south as Bunbury and as far east as Kalgoorlie to ride to the park at Lake Leschenaultia, Rosedale Road, Chidlow. There, someone conducts a short memorial service by the banks of the lake, at a monument dedicated by those branches as a permanent marker for this purpose.
    • Note: the parklands surrounding Lake Leschenaultia are administered by the Shire of Mundaring. The shire charges an entry fee to enter the grounds. Someone designated by the ride coordinator will often collect the entry fee at the start of the ride and the "treasurer" for the event will pay for the group to expedite entry.
    • Logistics:
    • For Perth Branch: Leave from BP East Perth at 9:00am sharp, for a short scenic ride.
    • Up to 10:15am -- Branches assemble in the carpark, cnr of Lloyd St and Gt Eastern Hwy (opposite Macca's and Mack1)
    • A Coffee Van will be parked at the start point, for those who need the caffeine.
    • 10:30 am -- Depart Midland
    • 11:00 am -- Arrive Lake Leschenaultia
    • 11:30am -- Service
    • 12 noon -- Lunch

Wheatbelt Swing - with John M.
Leave from East Perth at 9:00am.

      • This is a run up to Wongan (lunch at the pub), via Clackline, Toodyay (caffeine) and Goomalling. It's always a nice run on the twisty Toodyay-Goomalling road.
      • The return route takes in some little ridden roads from Wongan across towards the coast. There are some stunning views across to the coastal plain to be photographed too and we can stop for any "snappers" amongst us.
      • I'm hoping optimistically for some nice spring weather here so we can enjoy the verdant landscape and the scent of wildflowers. This one is about riding to enjoy the ambience. If the weather gods look like being unco-operative, I'll move this ride back to try to intercept suitable weather.
      • All up about 450kms. Fuel at Toodyay, Goomalling, Wongan, New Norcia, Gingin.

A Bridgetown too Far - with John M. and Ed.
Leave from Armadale (Car park opposite McDonald's) at 9:00 am Saturday.

      • Join John and Ed on a ride to Bridgetown and back. The route is based on one worked out by Ed in 2013 but updated to include the Fergusson Valley and back roads to Kirrup as well as Black Pete’s back-way from Collie to Wokalup.
      • There will be coffee stops, eating and detailed analysis of the current world situation along with all the other usual wind-bagging.
      • We will be overnighting in Bridgetown at Nelson's Hotel/Motel at the southern end of the main street. Eateries abound. The Freemason's Hotel in the middle of town has slightly cheaper hotel rooms and it's not too long a walk if you'd rather that option.

      • Basic Plan:
      • Ride to Bridgetown via Balingup and Nannup
      • Overnight in Bridgetown followed by breakfast on Sunday morning.
      • Nelson's of Bridgetown: (08) 9761 1641, Freemason's Hotel: (08) 9761 1725
      • Ride back to Perth via Boyup Brook, Mumballup and Collie.
      • The routes down and back will be different although it is impossible to avoid some duplication of SW Hwy. On both days the rides will be between 320 and 350 km

        Lunch in York, with Chips
        • Start from East Perth at 9:00am
        • The plan is to travel via Toodyay and Campersic Roads and the Rollercoaster to the ride the new, improved (and much safer) O'Briens Rd.
        • We'll stop briefly at the Peter Brock memorial (watch out for that tricky double apex bend there) to pay our respects to the King of the Mountain and then continue on to Gidgegannup for morning tea.
        • Those with the whole day to play can continue via back roads to Wooroloo and then on to York via Clackline and Spencers Brook.
        • After lunch we'll return to Perth via the Qualan West and Talbot West Roads to pick up the Great Southern Highway just east of The Lakes.
        • There'll be a final stop at The Lakes before returning to Perth via Great Eastern Highway.
        • Note that O'Briens Rd has been “improved” by the addition of new signage that warns motorists of an approaching corner.
        • Ride leader: Chips, for comments, questions, suggestions.

        • Return trip is via Moora, Bindoon and Bullsbrook.
        • We will be traversing a variety of roads (all sealed) at a pretty solid pace in warmish weather, so give your steed a good check over if you plan to join us on this one.
        • I don't expect us to be back in town much before five o'clock. This is a longish ride at around 520kms or so by the time you get home.
